Merchant &amp; Gould's trademark practice grew at a fast pace in first quarter, 2006, as the firm filed 275 trademarks. The intellectual property and litigation law firm ranked third among U.S. law firms in rankings tracked by&nbsp;<em>Trademark Insider </em>®. The repeat performance of Merchant &amp; Gould continues the top five trademark filing rank it has held for the past five years.

"We protect 20,000 brands worldwide," said Scott W. Johnston, chair of the trademark practice. Johnston congratulated partners Christopher Schulte and Jack Clifford, who ranked eleventh and forty-seventh, respectively, in the list of top 50 trademark attorneys nationally. "Chris and Jack exemplify all the attorneys in our trademark practice - talented, effective, efficient and focused on delivering strategic value to clients."

Johnston said the expanded activity reflects the experience and reputation of Merchant &amp; Gould trademark practice, and the comprehensive trademark protection its attorneys offer clients; including trademark asset management, licensing, litigation and international trademark services. Merchant &amp; Gould is frequently the choice of foreign companies seeking trademark protection in the U.S., Johnston added.

Clifford, who recently celebrated twenty-five years with Merchant &amp; Gould, has filed more than 2,700 trademarks, serves on the International Trademark Association's (INTA) Panel of Neutrals, and also serves in an advisory capacity to the World Trade Organization. "We protect brands like Louis Roederer Cristal ® Champagne, SUPERVALU, Voss ® Artesian Water, Polaris ®, Genmar ® and Malt-o-Meal ®," Clifford said.

Schulte's practice includes Fortune 500 companies and individual entrepreneurs. His international clients are located in the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany and Brazil.

Merchant &amp; Gould has been recognized for its trademark and copyright prosecution throughout its more than one hundred year history. Its team includes former examining attorneys from the United States Patent and Trademark Office who collectively have examined more than 15,000 federal trademark applications.
